The Mystery Train (Paul O’Brien)

A platform full of people

Are told to get in line

They’ve been queuing up for hours

Just to be on time

And the driver wears a blindfold

The stoker’s deaf and dumb

And the porter shouts instructions

When the time to leave has come

The platform empties slowly

As they climb on one by one

Carriages fill up with hope

All happy that they’ve come

The conductor gives the signal

The stokers sucks his thumb

Then he puts his flag away

His mission nearly done

All aboard all aboard all aboard

All aboard the mystery train

As they pull out of the station

It fills up with the sound

Of families going somewhere

And an engine outward bound

When the driver shouts ‘More steam!’

The stoker does oblige

The conductor takes a handkerchief

To wipe his bloodshot eyes

And they feel the spirits moving

Running down their backs

They feel the spirits moving

All along the track

All aboard all aboard all aboard

All aboard the mystery train

They race on through the twilight

And some are playing pontoon

But no one dares to look out

To see where they’re coming from

But the driver’s taking 40 winks

The stoker’s up and gone

The porter’s long forgotten

But the train is steaming on

All aboard all aboard all aboard

All aboard the mystery train
